It’s a beautiful movie, but beauty is more than what makes us feel good. Beauty can be harrowing, it can be soul crushing, it can be depressing and achingly lonely. It can make the most awe inspiring setting seem oppressive, and the most menial act of scrounging an existence seem dignified. Beauty does all this by touching your heart, and giving you the choice of entering a different state of engagement with the subject. You don’t have to take the choice, but with a movie as well done as Nomadland, you’d be a fool not to. 📽
